Abstract For the National Park Lower Odra a feasibility study has been carried out in order to verify the suggestions made in a maintenance and development plan. This plan was developed in order to re-establish the natural original function of the alluvial valley. Within the study the possibility to extend the present flooding period for some of the polders in the valley, as well as the possibility to create a continuous connection between one of the polders and the surrounding rivers, had to be verified. Using a coupled surface and groundwater model based on the components MIKE11 and FEFLOW, it was concluded that both suggestions are feasible and can even be combined. Within the project the coupling module IfmMIKE11 was successfully extended for the coupling of polder areas.
