Abstract Almost one and half centuries have passed since the seminal publication of DarcyÕs work, which can be considered as the starting point of quantitative hydrogeology. We argue that it is now time to construct a worldwide catalogue of hydrogeological properties and spatial structures of typical hydrogeological environments. With this aim, we propose a database with an open collaborative structure. It is a system where anyone can store and retrieve groundwater flow and transport properties, in order to facilitate stochastic modelling. The database will be accessible through a web interface (http://wwhypda.org) and provides individual values, probability density functions, variograms, and training images of the properties as a function of lithology, scale of observation, location, and geological environment.
