Abstract Nitrate reduction by zero valent iron (ZVI) has been previously studied, but the proper treatment for the by-product of ammonium has not been reported. This study is focused on simultaneous removal of nitrate and its by-product of ammonium, with the ZanF (zeolite anchored Fe), a product derived from zeolite modified by Fe(II) chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Batch experiments were performed without a buffer at different pH condition with ZVI or ZanF. ZanF was found to be more appropriate in PRBs than ZVI for treating nitrate by reducing nitrate without pH control at initial circum-neutral pH and sorbing the ammonium by-product simultaneously.
