Abstract An extensive field questionnaire of the population of Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, and its surroundings, was conducted with a sample of 900 persons in the urbanized and suburbanized areas of water pumping stations. Of particular interest were the answers regarding personal participation in the protection of the groundwater. Those questioned agreed that as individuals they could do much to protect the drinking water. Only a few were prepared to actively participate in the preservation of this natural resource. They agreed on the exceptional importance of providing pure drinking water for the future.
