Abstract The Longyangxia reservoir is now the biggest water conservancy in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and it has played an important role in exploiting hydroelectricity in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. To better manage the environmental issues in the region of Longyangxia reservoir, we designed the structure, function and database of an environmental information system based on remote sensing information integrated with GIS. The environmental detection information system in the region of Longyangxia reservoir comprises three subsystems: the remotely sensed data processing system, the environment information system, and the statistics database management system. This system has a detailed spatial and attribute database, which includes fundamental geographic elements, environment, landform, remotely sensed image, statistics and landscape photo data, and it allows for multifunction analyses. Trends in the environmental conditions have been analysed for the period 1987–1996.
