In the mid-1970s, hydrologists from circumpolar countries established the Northern Research Basins (NRB) group which has since organized meetings every 2–3 years. A working group of NRB on water balance organized a workshop of March 2004 for the purpose of collecting and synthesizing water balance data for northern experimental research basins, and this publication is the outcome.

The extreme environment, low population and logistical costs often frustrate efforts to enhance hydrological understanding of the high latitude regions of the world. However, insights into hydrological processes there have been gained by compiling existing water balance data sets. Results from 39 research watersheds in the USA, Canada, Japan, Russia, Norway, Greenland, and Finland are collected in this volume, with three contributions that highlight some of the significant problems in producing quality water balance results. An overview synthesizes all the information amounting to water balance data for over 500 basin years, distributed temporally from 1958 to the present.

The considerable amount of information provided and discussed will serve as a benchmark for future work in high latitude regions.
