This new publication comprises 32 papers selected for Symposium HS3 on diffuse pollution held during IUGG 99, the XXII General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, at Birmingham, UK, in July 1999. The papers deal with process and modelling studies at different scales, the contribution of agricultural and forestry land-use practices to nutrient export from diffuse sources and the effect of control strategies on water quality, including the role of soil properties and interaction between surface water and groundwater. The contributions cover a wide range of situations with respect to size of study area, type of experiment (field plot, catchment and modelling studies) climate, soil and its use, hydrology and agricultural production systems.
