Working Group on Hydrometeorological Projects

Co-chairs:
  Alain Pietroniro (CA) & Elenor Blythe (UK)

Members (Initial)

Background:

The original IAHS/WMO Working Group (WG) on GEWEX was organized in the late 1980’s to help IAHS play a significant role in GEWEX That included helping GEWEX to organize a continental-scale project that could help GEWEX to understand how to represent land surface processes in atmospheric models and that could serve as a test-bed to help GEWEX to achieve its goal of demonstrating the hydrologic utility of its work. Accordingly, the WG helped organize GCIP. It also helped organize a number of workshops to bring a hydrological perspective to the GEWEX science agenda. Since that time, the WG chair has been invited to participate in GEWEX planning meetings of interest to the WG.

The WG helped to organize many activities of mutual interest to IAHS and GEWEX. These include many special sessions at IAHS meetings beginning in 1991, joint sessions with IAMAS, and special sessions at meetings of AGU, EGU, EGU, etc. The WG helped organize international hydrometeorological projects in support of GEWEX goals, including: the Model Parameter Estimation Experiment (MOPEX), the Distributed Model Intercomparison Project (DMIP), the Project for Intercomparison of Land Surface Process Schemes (PILPS), several Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS) projects, the Water Resources Application Project (WRAP), and the Hydrologic Parameter Estimation Experiment (HEPEX). Elements of many of these projects have become woven into some of the IAHS Commissions and some PUB working groups.

The WG`s current term came to an end on 2July 2007 and it was decided not to extend it further, but to reflect on what has been accomplished, the opportunities and challenges that remain, and how IAHS might best continue its involvement, not only with GEWEX, but also with other hydrometeorological projects.

Terms of Reference:

The Working Group on Hydrometeorological Projects will serve as an over-all mechanism to help international hydrometeorological projects achieve their goals by:

  1. facilitating the inclusion of appropriate hydrological science in the projects;
  2. stimulating appropriate activities between international hydrometeorology projects and IAHS components;
  3. helping to foster the interests of the international hydrological community in these projects.

Project Criteria:

Projects of interest to this Working Group will have:

Working Group Composition:

The working group will be composed of:

Opportunities:

GEWEX has become more complex and requires a more entrepreneurial approach on the part of IAHS to continue to contribute to GEWEX in the future and to help GEWEX continue to provide benefits to IAHS members. · Other international hydrometeorological projects are emerging that are or will become of great interest to IAHS. These include:

These projects welcome contributions from IAHS that include:
